An outing to Lea and Jenny Lake

June 5th the Teton dam broke - the flood was significant, filled with debris including dead animals, farm chemicals and peoples food storage.  Many lost their homes.  We lived in a basement apt that filled all the way up with dirty water.  We stayed at my parents for a little while, as did other relatives, and then we went to Ricks College who opened their dorms and even meals in the cafeteria to flood victims.

Here is a pic of the dam breaking

Rexburg 19.4 miles away.

I was a secretary at First Security Bank and had to hand type all the flood mudded files.  I got really sick from working in those dirty conditions day after day.  (Dr. Rigby called it Trench Mouth)  Lost 27 lbs. from not being able to eat.

Mom Clarke during cleanup.  A house floated across the park,
hit Clarke's home, knocking off 3 pillars then it
landed in the parking lot next door.

So many miracles happened from the flood.  Many were compiled in a book that we own called "That Day in June".  I'll share two family miracles.  My uncle Dell was on the city council.  With all the standing water a mosquito problem was a growing concern.  They thought about spending the money to spray for mosquitoes but after praying about it felt it best to use the money for helping people.  A miracle reminiscent of early days in the church happened!  The Lord sent seagulls to Rexburg!!  Flocks of seagulls came and ate up all the larva's and we had no mosquito problem!

My Aunt Arlene worked for food services at the college which was now feeding so many flood victims.  She said that they watched in awe as the food supplies never ran out.  They would prepare in the back and see the supplies running low, go out and serve and come back to just exactly what they needed next.  One sister suggested they start documenting this amazing thing happening and another replied "No, we should not disturb the hand of the Lord."

In August we left the flooded Rexburg and headed off to our previously arranged honeymoon in Hawaii.

Thanksgiving at Klingler's 1976

I work as a secretary at First Security Bank.  My boss is a really wonderful man but a grumbly sort with rarely a smile; a man who wouldn't let me have a couple hours off to attend my own husband's graduation from Ricks or an afternoon off to attend my grandparents golden wedding anniversary - even though I had asked a couple weeks ahead of time for the time off.  Even so, I am grateful for the job and learned a lot and being a "kid" with no experience, they were very charitable to hire me in the first place.
