Europe 2002 Family Trip

Lush green hills, nestled villages, castles, absolute charm!  White stucco buildings with red tile roofs, chalets, wooden railed balconies laden with red, pink, purple and white geraniums; shutters on windows; flower boxes abundant and beautiful painted scrolling design work in such variety.  What a beautiful place.

Trains...people waving goodbye to loved ones as the trains pull away from the station...blowing kisses and smiling.  Gentle cows grazing in the green and bells clanking around their necks.

Completely exhausted...a couple nights lost sleep.  Very hot and suffering from it.

Neuschwanstein & Fussen

Train from Munich to Salzburg.  Jen, Aaron, Andrew got off the train to get water and were sure they'd be back in time.  When they didn't get back, the rest of us jumped off the train so that we wouldn't get split up.  We couldn't find them anywhere and it turns out they were on the train after all (hopped into a different door).  It was rather stressful and if only cell phones had been part of life back then it would have helped immensely!  We had helpful conductors who told them to get off in Rothenheim where we'd meet them. (We caught another train heading there.)

Saltzburg

Walked the streets, saw the sights.  Free concert at Mirabel Gardens and everyone fell asleep on the grass.

Train to Melk

Miss boat down Danube but being on the verge of heat exhaustion it was a welcome 1.5 hour rest waiting for the next boat. Wash our dirty clothes in the sink.

Train to Vienna

Mozart opera
Die Zauberflote

We were excited to see the Mozart's Magic Flute opera from a balcony (loge). We were all so tired that sadly that beautiful music lulled most of us to asleep.

Grocery store breakfast of raspberries banana, juice, roll.

Spend the night in same place 78 stairs up.

Graz

Pails walked around town with us and took us to the clock tower.  Treated us to dinner. (chicken, tomato salad, bread, cookies and cobbler and baklava.)  Church and lunch with Pails. (meat slice with gravy, tube pasta, peach with berry sauce, bread, torte for dessert)  Play games on the lawn.

Sleeper train to Venice

Filling our waterbottles

 Verona

Stechelberg - spectacular! A sleepy town of waterfalls at the end of the road. Sound of birds and water and distant rooster.

Cool and refreshed and wanted to stay here forever. Cool clean water.  Kids were all so happy, bouncy, delighted to be out of the heat and in the Swiss Alps.  Even got cold - needed jackets and heater.

Girls went to Muren, via train and gondola to Gimmelwald and down to Stechelberg while the boys went to Jungfraujoch - sledding and ice sculpture cave.

 Tumelbach falls

Sad to leave here. On to Paris

Land of my ancestors

Absolutely charming, delightful and unbelievably gorgious.  Night watchman tour.

Tegernsee

So beautiful and non-touristy.  SunValley's Sister city that Jen visited with her girl scouts.  Googamoos Hotel on the lake.

Back to Munich

Hmmm...not sure where this one was taken
but everyone is very sleepy.
