Australia Oct 2006

Cairns Tropical Zoo

I went on the business trip with Chris and Bryan.  It was fun to hold this koala.  They are very fragile and have a cartilage bum.  Chris's classes went well and I enjoyed walking around town and in a beautiful park, sipping a fresh made carrot juice and window shopping.  Went to an internet cafĂ© to check for Aaron's email. It was fun because Jen was on so we mailed back and forth for a little bit.

There are so many Asians in Australia, sushi bars and Asian restaurants etc...I almost felt like I was in Tokyo instead.  We went to the branch and there were so many from China.  They even have a Chinese branch that meets earlier.

I loved the Chinese Garden of Friendship! They design around the 4 elements of water, plants, stone and architecture. They include opposites such as calmness (yin) like a still pond and activity (yang) like cascading waterfall.  They contrast tall willowy bamboo with round flat stones.  It's to create a balanced whole. Beautiful koi, turtles resting on stones, giant lizards sunbathing on paths and incredibly fragrant white flowers scented the air along with lotus blossoms in the water.

We went from Cairns on an overnight boat trip in the Great Barrier Reef.  We took the 2 hour boat ride out to the sight and I took 2 motion sickness pills just in case.  They would have worked great if our trip had been just 30 minutes shorter...but blaaaa...I had to throw up in a bag on the boat. Chris & Bryan scuba dived and I snorkeled with a lady named Celine from France. (She's married to a man from Japan so they both speak English with each other.) Sea life was so colorful and varied in size and shape...sea turtles, a huge reef shark, giant clams, such beautiful fish and so much more. We stayed the night on the boat.  It tipped and swayed and rocked us to sleep all night long. It feels like were all drunks as we try to walk around on the boat.  (Pics didn't turn out from this sadly)
